President-elect Donald Trump has formally nominated Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, making her a top selection for his new administration. Known for her steadfast support of Trump, Stefanik serves as the House Republican Conference chair and has championed his “America First” approach, often questioning the U.N.’s effectiveness. In an official statement, Trump called Stefanik “a strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” highlighting her commitment to reshaping global partnerships.
The nomination of Stefanik marks Trump’s third major appointment since securing the presidency for a second term. Trump also selected Susie Wiles as his White House chief of staff and former ICE Director Tom Homan as his “border czar.” Stefanik’s role, however, will require Senate confirmation, setting the stage for a potentially challenging approval process given her outspoken stances.
Stefanik, who rose in the GOP ranks by replacing Liz Cheney in 2021, expressed gratitude for Trump’s trust and underscored her commitment to U.S. interests on the global stage. Her nomination follows Trump’s decision to exclude former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from this administration, opting for a fresh team that aligns closely with his evolving policies.
While Trump has publicly entertained other controversial appointments, Stefanik’s Senate confirmation could signal how the new administration will navigate international relations under the “America First” agenda. Other rumored appointees include tech magnate Elon Musk and RFK Jr., pointing to a potential for unconventional leadership picks aimed at reducing government spending and reshaping federal health policies.
