A historic ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect early Wednesday, aiming to end over a year of intense hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border. Announced by U.S. President Joe Biden and supported by France, the agreement seeks to bring stability by establishing a demilitarized zone along the Blue Line, the de facto border. Under the terms, Hezbollah will withdraw its forces north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the border, while Israel gradually pulls back its troops. This landmark deal holds the promise of lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon after 14 months of conflict.

The Lebanese army will play a crucial role in enforcing the ceasefire. As per the agreement, 5,000 Lebanese soldiers will deploy to replace Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon. This deployment aligns with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, originally designed to end the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. The resolution mandates that the area south of the Litani River be free of unauthorized armed groups. Western officials believe this is an opportunity for Lebanon's government to reassert control over its territory, though questions about the army’s resources and capabilities persist.

Monitoring of the ceasefire will involve an international mechanism overseen by the U.S., France, and UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL). Both nations emphasize the importance of preventing Hezbollah from rebuilding military infrastructure in the region. Biden reiterated Israel's right to self-defense, stating that any violation by Hezbollah would result in immediate action. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed this stance, highlighting Israel's preparedness to respond forcefully to any breach of the agreement.

Despite initial doubts, early signs suggest cautious optimism. Residents of southern Lebanon have already begun returning home, many expressing relief and hope for a more peaceful future. Roads leading to southern towns like Tyre are filled with returning families, even as the Lebanese army advises caution. The joy of displaced residents is palpable, symbolizing a collective yearning for stability after months of displacement and destruction.

This ceasefire is seen as a significant diplomatic achievement, offering a rare glimmer of hope for broader regional peace. President Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron praised the deal, emphasizing its potential to stabilize Lebanon and secure Israel’s northern border. While challenges remain, this agreement signals a critical step towards a more peaceful and secure future for both nations, setting a precedent for conflict resolution in a region long marred by violence.
