Trump Appoints Tom Homan as Border Czar, Pledging Tough Immigration Stance

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed former ICE Director Tom Homan as the nation’s new “border czar,” marking a return to Trump’s strict immigration policies. Homan, known for his staunch views, previously championed the controversial “zero tolerance” policy that resulted in family separations at the southern border. His appointment reinforces Trump’s promises to address immigration through mass deportations, border security enhancements, and a crackdown on cartels.

Homan’s role will encompass oversight of the U.S. southern and northern borders, maritime, and aviation security. Trump praised Homan as the ideal candidate to handle the complexities of border enforcement, drawing attention to his decades of experience. Homan’s plans include bolstering the ICE deportation force, a pledge to implement "the biggest deportation force" the U.S. has seen, and mass deportations under the initiative dubbed “Operation Aurora.”

A critical focus of Homan's strategy involves hard-line approaches to immigration, such as the immediate deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants and shutting down the CBP One app, used to streamline entry processing at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Trump administration’s hard stance includes a policy aimed at increasing resources for Customs and Border Protection. This includes a 10% salary increase for agents, hiring of 10,000 new border personnel, and bonuses to improve retention. Homan has emphasized that a robust border force is essential to national security, especially amid concerns about cartel activity and the trafficking of fentanyl.

Alongside border security, Trump and Homan are expected to target drug cartels, with Trump proposing to label Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.
